Teddy Bear Puppies for Sale in Ohio

The Teddy Bear Shichon is a designer crossbreed that mixes the bichon frise and shih tzu breeds. They may also be referred to as zuchons, tzu frises or just Teddy Bear dogs. The shih tzu breed originated out of China and was a palace guard dog that also helped keep rodents at bay, and the bichon frise got its start in France as a trickster dog popular with the wealthy elite. While the Teddy Bear Shichon is relatively new as a crossbreed, it's one of the most popular because of its doll-like appearance and affectionate nature.

Breed Characteristics

When it comes to playfulness and giving affection, it's hard to find a better dog than the Teddy Bear Shichon. These dogs are definitely people pleasers and bond tightly to their owners. They do like a daily walk to get their energy out, but even as little as 20 to 30 minutes around the block is generally enough to make them happy. They are excellent lapdogs and do well in homes with small children and elderly family members. They also generally get along with cats and other dogs, although they may have trouble playing safely with larger dogs.

Appearance

While not an officially recognized breed, the Teddy Bear Shichon would fall into the toy group. They generally end up around 7 to 15 pounds and 9 to 12 inches tall as adults, but this can vary quite a bit depending on the parents. Dogs on the smaller end of the spectrum may be referred to as teacup or miniature size. In appearance, these pups can best be summed up as fluffy. Their coat usually closely resembles that of the bichon frise but can include almost any color combination. Black and white is a very popular coloring. This breed is considered hypoallergenic and low to no shedding, which makes it a popular choice for families who don't want to deal with pet hair or have sensitivities. They do require regular trips to the groomer for a clip to ensure their coat stays free of mats and tangles.

Temperament

Teddy Bear Shichons are known for the quirky personalities and playful nature, and they make excellent companions. They are all about pleasing their owners and thrive in an environment based on praise and positive reinforcement. Like their bichon frise parent, they are very intelligent dogs and are highly trainable as they love to learn and show off their tricks. When it comes to energy level, they rank about average, needing just a 30-minute walk or play session a day to get the puppy wiggles out. These dogs generally do well with other pets but may not get along in a home with small furry animals like rabbits or rodents, and they need to be protected from small children or large dogs that may play too rough.

Health

Teddy Bear Shichons are considered an overall healthy breed, and they don't require a lot of maintenance of upkeep beyond regular vet checks and vaccines. However, like other small dogs and the shih tzu and bichon frise parent breeds, they can be prone to certain health weaknesses you'll want to watch out and prepare for. Because of their small jaws and delicate teeth, tooth loss and gum disease can be an issue for this breed, and they'll need regular dental cleaning as part of their overall veterinary care. Blindness can be an issue with advanced age, and it's also important to keep an eye on their weight to decrease the chances of joint issues.
