Small but Terrible: A Quick Look at the Chihuahua Puppy

The Chihuahua is considered to be the smallest dog breed, but don’t be fooled by its small size. It can live up to 14 to 18 years, making it one of the few dog breeds that can live long. It is named after a state in Mexico where it was first discovered. Chihuahuas have been very popular among the members of the upper class, and one famous socialite, Paris Hilton, is known to have a Chihuahua named Tinkerbell. This breed is considered a toy dog, which refers to a group of dog breeds that are quite small. Other toy dogs include poodles and terriers.

Types of Chihuahua Puppies

This dog breed comes in two types: long-hair Chihuahuas and short-hair Chihuahuas. They also come in a variety of colors, the rarest being a blue brindle. Before one buys a Chihuahua they should know how the puppy was raised and whether its parents or grandparents were aggressive or not. The temperament of this dog breed rests on these two factors. It is possible that if one gets a puppy that has been brought up with little or no training and socialization, the puppy would become ill-tempered. Ill-tempered Chihuahuas are easy to provoke, which would cause them to attack the one provoking them. This type of behavior would make them highly unsuitable for families with small children.

Chihuahua's are very loving and loyal

When raised in a loving and nurturing environment with plenty of chances to socialize, this breed tends to form a tight bond and loyalty with one particular owner. It is also possible for the dog to become attached to more owners. Chihuahuas prefer the companionship of other Chihuahuas, and may not be friendly to other dog breeds. Due to their size, Chihuahuas make good pets for those who live in apartments. Their size also causes most owners to let them get away with almost anything, which can lead to bad behavior later on. Another bad habit owners form while caring for their dog is that they carry their Chihuahuas around instead of taking them on walks. Walking can do a lot in preventing the dog to develop behavioral problems later on, but it seems that most owners neglect this little detail.

Learn to care for your Chihuahua Puppy properly

Like almost all dog breeds, Chihuahuas are prone to certain diseases. Great care should be taken in raising them especially during the dogs’ first few months. Hydrocephalus is one health disorder common in this breed, but sometimes it is mistaken for moleras, where the skull has a soft spot. Another health disorder these dogs can experience is hypoglycemia, or the lack of blood sugar.  

Female Chihuahuas usually give birth of up to 4 puppies. Adult Chihuahuas usually weigh no more than 3 kilograms and are 6 to 10 inches tall. Owners can buy dog carriers (some are designed to be a fashionable handbag), clothes, and other types of accessories. Some even go so far as to buy socks and/or shoes and dress them up in different types of costumes.

Before focusing on the type of dog accessories and clothes to buy, one must focus on training their dog. Even if the size of this dog breed is smaller than other dogs, remember that it is still a dog. And what all dogs need are training, discipline, and its owners’ attention.
