If you want a dog breed that is affectionate, easy to train, cheerful, friendly, and gentle with your little children, then the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the right dog breed for you and your family.  This breed has a royal origin dating back to the 16^th century from toy spaniels bred by the European Royal Families including King Charles II who willingly donated his name to the breed.

The breed almost came into extinction until rescued by an American and brought to the United States of America sometime in the 40’s.  As a breed, it was accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1996 classifying it as the largest dog in the toy dog category.

What it Looks Like

Small but sturdy, the Cavalier grows to a maximum of thirteen (13) inches tall, and weighs thirteen (13) to eighteen (18) pounds.  Its color can be any of the following: ruby or reddish-brown all over, combination of black and tan, tricolor or black and white with tan markings on cheeks, ears, eyebrows, legs, an tail, and rich chestnut over predominantly white color. 

Characteristics

The Cavalier is very affectionate.  It loves to be with people and instinctively follows its owners around the house.  To maintain its good disposition, it needs to be showered with love and affection.  The worst thing you can do with this breed is to leave it alone for a long period of time in the house.  The dog needs the attention and affection of its owners.

Exclusively a house or companion dog, you cannot expect a Cavalier to bark a lot so it doesn’t do well as a watch dog.  It easily gets along with other pets or animals especially when oriented to them early.  A distinct trait of the Cavalier is that it is gentle on children regardless of age.  It can be overly friendly and tends to bow down to dog breeds that are more dominant.

The Cavalier can live up to fourteen years (14) when treated well.  One of its primary special needs is affection.  It needs the attention and affection of its owners to keep its disposition and to maintain its overall health. 

Although it can be tempting, you should avoid giving the Cavalier too much food.  Feeding should be once a day but making sure it eats a well balanced diet.  You can feed him with table raw vegetables but never the other table scraps. 

It is a relatively healthy breed of dog, but it can also be prone to some hereditary problems such as heart disease and the spinal column cyst which can be extremely painful.  Before you buy a Cavalier, make sure that it comes from a reputable breeder to avoid such health problems to occur.

Just like any other dog breeds, it is essential to keep your Cavalier well groomed.  Brushing its long coat daily or every other day will prevent matting.  Special attention to the long ears and eyes in grooming will do your dog so much good.
